Along the gendarme path you can walk along the coast from the Danish-German border at Padborg and up through Kollund, Gråsten, Broagerland, Dybbøl, Sønderborg and out to Høruphav. The route follows paths and roads from the old border gendarmes who guarded the land border and controlled shipping along the coast. This was done on foot, with each gendarme protecting an area. This has been the case since 1920, when the Danish-German border was lowered further after the lost piece of land in 1864, until 1958 when the job went to the police. A historic but also beautiful route along the coast.
